Mount of Beatitudes

The Mount of Beatitudes is a hill in Northern Israel near the Sea of Galilee between Capernaum and Gennesaret and where tradition says Jesus delivered the Sermon on the Mount.

In the 4th century a Byzantine Christian church was erected near the current site and it was used until the 7th century. The remains of a cistern and a monastery are still visible. The current Christian and Roman Catholic chapel was built in 1938.

The Chapel
The mountain has its summit in a Catholic chapel built by the Franciscan Sisters in 1939 with the support of the Italian leader Mussolini. The building built by renowned architect Antonio Barluzzi is full of numerical symbolism. In front of the church, the symbols on the pavement represent Justice, Prudence, Fortitude, Charity, Faith and Temperance Inside the church hangs the cape used by Pope Paul VI in 1964.
