Garden Tomb

The Garden Tomb is located north of the Damascus Gate, away from the Old City of Jerusalem. This room was built during Romans periods and today is surrounded by a beautiful garden, which is considered by many visitors to Jerusalem as a place of peace and tranquility of the vast and populous city of Jerusalem.

In 1867, the Garden Tomb was discovered and unearthed in 1891. The year 1882 was decisive for the subsequent discovery when the same English General Charles Gordon went to the place and became convinced that this was probably the tomb of Jesus. They also argued that there are marks of Christian worshiping in the grave, proving its holiness through time. The “Society of the Garden Tomb” was created in 1894 to preserve the place with donations by people that visit the grounds.

20 Now on the first day of the week Mary Magdalene went to the tomb early, while it was still dark, and saw that the stone had been taken away from the tomb. 2 Then she ran and came to Simon Peter, and to the other disciple, whom Jesus loved, and said to them, “They have taken away the Lord out of the tomb, and we do not know where they have laid Him.”
