It is understandable such a large city would have existed in this spot due to its rich fertile soil and natural springs and its ideal location between two major trading routes. It is estimated that around 6,000 people resided in the city during the Bronze Age.Below this discovery lies an even older settlement that dates back approximately 7,000 years.

Archaeologists have uncovered Egyptian tools as well as a ritual temple that housed remains of animal sacrifices and carved figurines.

The city took up 160 acres and was 10 times larger than the well known Biblical city of Jericho. It appears as though the city was abandoned only a few centuries into its existence. One of the theories is that this was the result of severe flooding which created an uninhabitable swap.
