As a living monument of the Jewish people about the Holocaust, Yad Vashem safeguards the memory of the past and imparts its meaning for the future. Established in 1953 as a world center for documentation, research, education and commemoration of the Holocaust, Yad Vashem is today a dynamic and vital place of intergenerational and international encounter.

The site is located in the Jerusalem Forest, on the western slope of Mount Herzl, which is about 2,638 feet above sea level.
